Featuring high on the list is the following; working on long-term projects; finishing that new employee experience strategy; rescheduling a meeting that has already been postponed twice, then the phone rings.

After your conversation, you find yourself searching through emails from last week, suddenly a grievance is flagged and it’s back to the phone…sigh, you’ve only got an hour left.

Now, I’m guessing that your to-do list is still yet to be complete, and you’re left asking yourself; where did the time go? You’re not alone. If you asked your peers a typical working day looks like – they might find it difficult to answer. That’s because on any given day an HR professional will be juggling an array of responsibilities.

In fact, according to CIPD, the majority (22%) of HR professionals time during the week is spent meetings, followed by having informal conversations in the business (15%), then, dealing with grievances and queries (14%) and on to emails (32%)

Starting to sound familiar? This is why strategy keeps getting left behind.

According to TotalJobs, the top three tasks conducted by HR professionals use up ten times the amount of time that is required for the low priority tasks. Such as on-boarding and instructions (1.1%), redundancy management (1.5%), and personnel management (2.6%).

On top of this workload HR also must process payroll, conduct performance evaluations, administer employee benefit plans, ensure government compliance, answer holiday requests…the list goes on.

Do you feel like your workloads increasing by the minute? You’re not wrong.

In fact, 75% of HR professionals say their workload is increasing and only 2% say its decreasing.

Remember your to-do list? Here’s why that long-term project plan and employee experience strategy is taking so long to complete.

HR professionals only have 17% of the time to work on strategic initiatives or long-term projects that contribute to the company’s overall success.

With an average HR-to-employee ratio of 1:100, it’s hard for many HR departments to find the time to designate to these actions. HR professionals are recognising that at least 30% of their role could be done by automated software.
