Working in HR is not without it’s challenges

Below is a blog from a guest blogger, Sarah Wilkinson, Business Partner:

Working in HR is not without its challenges… though they may not be what you think….

Having worked for my current organisation for 4 years, I have witnessed a culture shift which is still on-going. For a while now, we’ve been trying to put the emphasis back on our people and ensure we have the right balance. It’s about flexing and softening our approach while still addressing the need for policies. We’ve been transparent with our employees, and hold workshops where they can come and give us feedback and input into our direction, yet we still have some way to go with breaking down the barriers between ‘us and them’. That’s the first challenge; having the support and belief from your colleagues, that you’re not just there to inflict bad news or to run to when things go wrong.

You might not be surprised then, to acknowledge that, linked to this, is the support required from managers. Without their backing, we’re limited in our levels of success. We need to be able to engage with our entire workforce, and our influence is dependent upon their support. We need to work together with our managers right from the design and implementation of our projects as a whole, and that includes managers involving us at a strategic level. We need to be involved in the design of their departments, looking at the required skill-sets and talent; how we retain the right individuals and operate our functions by saving the organisation on cost and administration, thus allowing for more innovation.

By working together, there are no bounds to what we can achieve – and it all comes down to one important thing first: The People.
